This is more of a review of amazon then anything else. The only reason i Pre-ordered this game, opposed to waiting on finding it cheaper used, was for the “art book” and “soundtrack”. Imagine my surprise when i opened the package and there was Just a CD. The soundtrack itself is lackluster with mainly 30 second music clips. No where did amazon say that the “art book” was a DIGITAL one. There is only about 25 different pictures on this digital “art book” and they are nothing that you couldn’t easily find online. I was extremely disappointed with the false advertising of this pre-order.

This game is the worst out of the series. It seems the developers decided to just give gamers a royal headache when they decided on some features for this game.

1) There is an intense white screen everytime there is a random battle. It lasts for a few LONG seconds before the battle loads.

2) The battle commands switch back and forth from each individual party member to the enemy. This wouldn’t be bad IF they had put the commands at the bottom of the screen so the cursor is the only thing moving. Since they put them on the left hand side the WHOLE screen moves twice (from your character to the enemy and back to your next character) everytime you select an enemy. They also added an additional annoying button to “begin battle” or “undo” that pops up after you’ve finished all of your selections.

3) There isn’t any way to change the format to another less frustrating one. One format fits all.

4) The dialogue is simply idiotic. Covers the same topic over and over and anytime something happens the first word they say is “HUH?”.

5) Voice acting is maybe a “C”

6) Scenes are beautiful when you’re able to look around.

The top two are game-breakers for me. I’ve tried for 3 days to play this game and every single time it’s given me a horrible headache. The strange thing is that I WANT to enjoy this game. I pre-ordered this game specifically because I have enjoyed the other titles in this series.

Rent it first, before you waste your money.

I’m a “mature” gamer that’s been playing rpg’s since the very first Zelda and this one is the first one that has given me nasty headaches. If someone finds a way to change the format please let me know. I’d really like to see if the game gets any better, but as it is now it’s just going in the garbage.

I don’t know anything about the series this game comes from, Suikoden, or its predecessors. I bought this game on pre-order solely through its own merits in possible DS gaming fun and let me tell you, its is fun. . . .

However, I was surprised at the amount of mature themes inside the game, especially since its rating is E. A ruler character has three wives and children by several of them, which is commented upon in surprise by the other characters (parents beware). Mass murder of whole countries happens several times. . . . Well liked characters die and do not come back- multiple times there are tribes with their own gods and goddesses whom are worshiped in both comical and non-comical ways. If you are getting this game for a child be wary of the themes inside. The major theme of the game consists of the main characters trying to defeat a man who has posed himself as the leader of the only ‘true’ religion, where leaders can see into the future and everything is pre-ordained by a demonic deity.

The religion is also called the ‘Order of the One True Way’ which makes me wonder if the creators were trying to comment on a certain religion and if so. . . . they shouldn’t be. The religion in the game is not anything I see in real life in any form. . . . but as other reviewers seem to think children seeing or playing this game should consider it as a learning tool then I have to wonder what people want kids to learn. . . . that all religion should be questioned because it makes you believe in something? Or that all religion is evil because they claim it inhibits free will? Which isn’t true and if it is the purpose then this game and its creators are completely disingenuous.

Something I wouldn’t actually prescribe to small kids or adults. Nobody should hope to ‘learn’ anything so deep from a mediocre video game.

Just a thought.

Going on, the characters are very likable however and always ‘try’ to do the right thing. . . by your own leave as your choices are what makes the story continue one way or another. The animated sections are incredible and I eagerly awaited when another would begin.

One last sore point is that some of the mini games and side adventures require you to have a wifi and a second person with the game. Since I had neither I missed out on seemingly awesome game play and that is rather saddening.

So, pros are the colors, character designs and ability to peruse its world on your own time table make up for a rather good ride.

Cons, mature themes, possible disingenuous religious commentary and inability to access all side games without wifi.

In the end, a mix of classic ‘dungeon crawler’ and ‘role playing’ type gaming makes for a fun time if you have more then an hour to lose yourself in. On the whole I enjoyed the game although I was surprised by its story as I went along.

Three out of five stars.
